Cover 1:
The image has been framed and cropped so that you can see a full view of Britney in a medium/long shot lying on the ground against a pink silk sheet. An aerial shot is used in this image to subconsciously appeal to the male audience as she is lying on the ground and the person reading the magazine is on top of her which is in the position of sex, therefore appealing to the target audience as the men who read this magazine will subliminally feel like they are on top of her. If you look at what Britney is wearing, she is wearing short shorts and a black bra with a white cardigan. Straight away from this you can see that this is again appealing to the male side of the audience as she is dressed very provocatively and in a sexual way, which attracts them to buy the magazine.
As you can also see, she is holding a teletubby in her arms just as if a child would, which appeals to the male aspect of the audience further as it makes her seem as if she is pure and innocent yet very sexual. Another prop she uses which goes hand in hand with the other aspects of the image that I just mentioned is the telephone. She is holding the telephone to her ear to portray herself as a normal teenager just like she is presented in her ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ video in the school uniform, in order to subliminally show the audience that she is a normal teenager that is innocent as she has the teletubby but is also very sexual at the same time by what she is wearing. This is to appeal to the male audience as they want to see that she has all these different sides to her and they like that she is a innocent teenager but also very sexual.

If you look at the setting on this cover she is laying down on a large pink silk sheet. The connotations of this are that it makes her come across as more girly and feminine which is specifically done to attract men to it so they will go and buy it. There is a use of intertextuality in this cover. This is the use of the teletubby, which is held in Britney’s arms. The representation of the Teletubbys before being put in this context was that they were lovable children’s characters. Once being put into this context they are used as a symbol of sexual innocence for Britney in order to attract the male audience. There are also lots of different colours being used in this front cover.
The most noticable colour being used in this magazine cover is the pink background. As I mentioned before, this is in order the make her seen more feminine as pink symbolises femininity and that is exactly the message that they want to put across. Another colour that is being used in the front cover is white as she is wearing a white jacket. This is significant because whote symbolises innocent and being pure which, when mixed with the sexually provocative clothing she is wearing, she gives of the message of a innocent teenage girl that is also not afraid be act sexually which is exactly what the male audience want.

You seem to have a very firm grasp of the concept of symbololism which is encouraging. Try to elaborate on this concept with the use of words such as overt and covert (open and hidden), denotation and connotation (what is depicted and what is symbolised) and subjectivity and objectivity (what is felt by the audience as opposed to what is factual about the image). An encouraging start.
